Using the wrong sponge can scratch a surface permanently. Here is how to match brush stiffness and sponge material to what you are cleaning.

Scratched nonstick pans and dulled countertops are usually a scrubbing-tool mismatch, not a durability problem. Here is how to choose correctly.

Read the abrasiveness level

Non-scratch scrub sponges (usually blue or white backing) are safe on nonstick cookware, glass and countertops. Heavy-duty green scouring pads are for cast iron, grills and baked-on grime — never use them on nonstick or glass cooktops.

Bristle stiffness on brushes

Stiff nylon bristles handle baked-on food and grout lines. Softer silicone bristle brushes are gentler and dry faster with less bacteria buildup than natural fiber brushes, which is why many kitchens now prefer them for dishes.

Handle-style brushes vs. hand brushes

A long-handled dish brush keeps hands out of hot or soapy water and reaches the bottom of tall bottles and glasses. A hand-held brush gives more control for detail work like grout lines and corners.

Toilet brushes and hygiene

Look for a toilet brush with a holder that allows the brush head to air dry rather than sitting in a closed caddy — trapped moisture is what causes odor, not the brush material itself.

Replacing sponges regularly

Kitchen sponges harbor bacteria fast; a sponge with a scrubber layer that visibly wears down (color-fade indicator) makes it easier to know when to replace it, typically every one to two weeks with daily use.

Before you buy

Match abrasiveness to your most delicate surface, not your toughest job — you can always scrub harder with a soft pad, but you cannot undo a scratch from one that is too abrasive.
